ProView – AKU Outdoors Women’s Rocket DFS GTX Review
These shoes are perfect for people looking for a great hiking shoe that is a step up from trail runners. These shoes carry components of trail runners and approach shoes to make an extremely effective fast hiker.
I was able to test these shoes on front range trails in Colorado. I took them on a variety of trails, some being dusty and rocky and others being muddy. The Rocket DFS performed great in all conditions. They stuck to rocks and handled loose dirt like a champ. They also kept my feet well protected in mud.

Summary
Based on what I read online I thought this product would run small. Online people said that AKU shoes were skinny and recommended sizing up. I ordered a half size bigger than my normal size, and the shoe was way too big. These shoes run true to size and I recommend getting your normal active shoe size.
Overall
4.8Pros
- Stick to rocks like nobody’s business
- Have a nifty double lace system
- Lock in your heel effectively
Cons
-
Have a break-in period
Fit/Comfort
This shoe fits true to size. They lock in your heel effectively and keep your foot stable. It honestly reminds me a lot of my La Sportiva TX3’s, but stiffer and obviously with a very different sole. While I didn’t get to test these shoes in the alpine due to the season, I believe that is where these will thrive. They allow stability and grippiness on rocky terrain but are designed for all sorts of trail conditions and being on your feet in them for a long period of time.

One thing I will note is there is a break in period. On my first hike or two they rubbed the inside of my foot slightly, but it did not last beyond that. I feel like with the rise of trail runners, people forget that stable shoes take a few wears to break in. Don’t let that deter you from this shoe!
Look/Style
These shoes look very technical but are flashy! The women’s shoes come in a variety of colors that are cute and trendy but also have the black style for those who want a less flashy/ more timeless option.

Features
My favorite feature about this shoe is the double lace system. As someone who struggles to keep her heel stable in footwear, the extra security is very appreciated! I especially feel like this is key for day trips in the alpine – it is a pain to have to keep re-tying your shoes. I also want to shout out the Gore-Tex component. It is a nice feature for unexpected puddles or muddy trails.
Function/Performance
These shoes are great for day hikes – I would even recommend them for approaches. I don’t think I would be quite comfortable on aggressive scrambling excursions with them but I would choose them for a long rocky approach or an alpine hike.

Durability/Construction
These shoes are very durable! The upper part of the shoe has a nice layer of protection for the mesh.
What sets the product apart?
This product is unique because it is a great shoe for day hikes or long days out in the mountains. You can count on it for stability, comfort, and grippiness all at once all while getting moisture protection and a double lace system. It is obvious that all of the details in this shoe are dialed.
Who is the product for?
This product is for the day hiker or alpine adventurist. I would take these on a long, rocky approach or mountain escapade but also just to the trails in my backyard. They are reliable for all conditions you could run into on any trail you may choose.
Friendliness to the Earth
AKU takes proper steps toward sustainability by using recycled materials in its footwear. AKU shoes consistently use recycled footbeds, zero-impact leather, and high-quality sourced materials. The Rocket DFS GoreTex uses eco-friendly waterproof materials and a partially recycled Ortholite sole. That being said, it still contains around 50% synthetic materials that are not highly recycled or biodegradable.

The Final Word
This is a great shoe for the day hiker or alpine adventurist. It is designed to take you over long distances on a variety of terrain. They keep your feet dry and comfy for any trail you seek to tackle. The details in this shoe are clearly thought out and are worth the investment for a do it all hiker!
