Cons
- Lack of ankle support
My primary testing ground for the Astral TR1 Mesh 2.0 was Eno River State Park in North Carolina. I wore these shoes as I navigated the park’s rocky paths, muddy sections after a good rain, and numerous creek fords. The weather ranged from sunny and dry to damp and overcast, offering a full spectrum of conditions for testing these shoes. The more I wore these shoes, the more they became my go-to for just about everything else. I used them on my walks around the neighborhood, my relaxing shoes for hanging around camp, and casual shoes for running last-minute errands. Overall, these shoes proved themselves to be worthy of any environment.

Fit/Comfort
From the moment I slipped these shoes on, the comfort was immediate. They felt broken in right out of the box, offering a secure yet non-restrictive fit that cradled my feet just right. Even after extended periods of everyday wear, my feet felt great, with no hot spots or discomfort.
Look/Style
What really surprised me was just how stylish these shoes are. Despite their technical capabilities, they didn’t scream “ugly outdoor shoe.” They seamlessly integrated into my everyday wardrobe. Whether I was heading to the local coffee shop or gearing up for a tough hike, they looked good with anything.

Features
The mesh upper in my TR1 Mesh 2.0’s is incredibly breathable, which was fantastic on warmer days and for quick drying after a dunk. The rubber outsole with its aggressive lugs offered exceptional grip, giving me confidence on varied terrain, from slick, mossy rocks in the creek beds to the loose dirt on the higher trails. The supportive midsole provided all the stability I needed without ever feeling clunky.
Weight/Packability
These shoes are incredibly lightweight and flexible, which makes them a joy to wear for extended periods. Their minimal bulk also means they’re super easy to pack.
Function/Performance
This is where the TR1 Mesh 2.0 truly excelled for me. They proved versatile in every outdoor environment that I tried. On dry trails at Eno, they felt like a comfortable, agile hiking shoe. Even after being completely submerged in a creek, the shoes dried out remarkably well, and to my surprise, even my feet felt dry in half an hour thanks to the excellent drainage and breathability. They handled the Eno’s diverse terrain, from slick roots to rocky riverbeds, with confidence-inspiring traction.

These shoes absolutely met and even exceeded the product description. They truly are a great water shoe that effortlessly doubles as a walk-around-camp or everyday shoe. Their ability to shed water and dry quickly while still providing robust trail performance is what really sets them apart from anything else I’ve tried.
Durability/Construction
After about a month of use, these shoes have held up remarkably well. The construction feels robust, and the materials seem to be of really high quality. They feel genuinely built to last.
What sets the product apart?
The Astral TR1 Mesh 2.0 stands out because it genuinely delivers on the promise of being a hybrid shoe. Many “water shoes” compromise on trail performance or look overly technical for casual wear. These don’t. They are a great water shoe that can be used as a walk-around-camp or everyday shoe, seamlessly blending technical performance with appealing aesthetics that worked for my personal style.
Who is the product for?
I’d say these shoes are for anyone who needs a versatile, comfortable, and durable shoe that can handle both wet and dry environments. They are ideal for casual hikers who frequently encounter water crossings, paddlers who need reliable grip on slippery surfaces, campers looking for a comfortable and protective camp shoe, or even just people who want a reliable pair of shoes for diverse activities and travel.

Friendliness to the Earth
It’s important to me that the brands I support align with my values, and Astral definitely does. They aren’t just about making great gear; they’re deeply committed to environmental responsibility. They are a Certified B Corp, which means they meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
The Final Word
The Astral Men’s TR1 Mesh 2.0 is an exceptional piece of footwear that has quickly become a favorite in my collection. It truly excels as a versatile hybrid for diverse outdoor and everyday adventures.
