Rumpl The Camp Pillow Review The Link

ProView – Rumpl The Camp Pillow Review

A good camp pillow is one of those pieces of gear you don’t think matters—until you spend a few nights sleeping on a rolled-up jacket and wake up with a stiff neck. I’ve been testing the Rumpl Camp Pillow over the past several trips, from road trips and car camping weekends to travel days bouncing between ski towns, and overall, it has become one of those comfort items I keep reaching for. It strikes a nice balance between comfort and portability, especially for travel and car camping setups where getting quality sleep actually matters.

Summary

Really nice pillow that can be converted for backpacking.

Overall
4.8

Pros

  • Dual texture
  • Multiuse

Cons

  • Large

I originally tossed this pillow into my car for a quick car camping trip near Mt. Elbert, thinking it would just be a “luxury item” I probably wouldn’t use much. Instead, it ended up becoming one of the first things I packed for every trip after that even when I would have a bed. The biggest thing I noticed was how much more normal sleeping felt compared to the usual backpacking strategy of stuffing random layers into a stuff sack. Whether I was sleeping in the back of my car, crashing in a tent, or just staying at a friends house iit actually felt like having a real pillow instead of just improvising. That said, it is too big to carry on longer trips.

Performance

This pillow performs really well in terms of actual sleep quality. It has enough loft to feel supportive without being overly firm, and it doesn’t flatten out awkwardly during the night. For travel, van life, road trips, and campground setups, it honestly feels much closer to a normal pillow than most camp pillows I’ve used. I also really like that its slightly smaller than a traditional pillow so it is really easy to bring in long van rides and grab a quick nap on!

Fit & Comfort

Comfort is definitely where this pillow shines. The size feels generous without being oversized, and the soft outer fabric gives it a much less technical feel than a lot of camping pillows on the market. It works well whether you sleep on your back or side, and the pillow insert gives it a more natural structure than inflatable camp pillows.

Look & Style

I think this pillow is adorable. I have the mushroom print and its mainly blue with cute little shroomies on it. I also LOVE that theres a silky cold side and a fleece side so it really fits whatever temperature you’re in.

Features

One of the best features is that the pillow insert can be removed. That means if you really wanted to take it backpacking, you could use the outer shell as a stuff sack pillow and fill it with clothes or extra layers instead. That versatility makes it more useful than a standard camp pillow. The included stuff sack is also surprisingly nice quality and makes the whole setup feel a little more premium.

Weight & Packability

This is probably the category where I’m most split on the pillow. For car camping, road trips, flying, or general travel, I think the size is excellent. It packs easily into duffels or bins and feels worth bringing for the comfort upgrade. For backpacking though, it’s personally a bit too bulky for me to justify. The removable insert does help offset that somewhat since you can convert it into more of a stuff-sack-style pillow setup, but personally, I am not sure ai would really end up doing that.

Function & Performance

From a functionality standpoint, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do: provide a genuinely comfortable sleeping setup outdoors. It also transitions really well between uses. I found myself using it:

  • Car camping
  • Traveling
  • Sleeping in the car after ski days
  • Flights and long drives
  • Guest pillow situations

This versatility makes it feel less niche than a lot of camping-specific pillows.

Durability & Construction

The construction feels solid overall. The stitching and materials have held up well being tossed around in the car and packed repeatedly. The fabric still feels soft after extended use, and the stuff sack hasn’t shown wear despite frequent stuffing and unpacking. Nothing about it feels cheaply made and it is really easy to wash.

What sets the product apart?

What really separates this pillow from a lot of camp pillows is that it prioritizes actual comfort over being as tiny and ultralight as possible. A lot of camping pillows technically save space but end up sacrificing sleep quality. This one feels more like bringing a real pillow outdoors while still remaining reasonably travel-friendly. The removable insert also adds versatility that many camp pillows lack.

Who is the product for?

I’d recommend this pillow most for:

  • Car campers
  • Van lifers
  • Travelers
  • Ski road trips
  • Campground camping
  • Anyone who prioritizes sleep comfort outdoors
  • For backpackers, it may feel too bulky unless you plan to use the shell stuffed with clothing.

Friendliness to the Earth

Rumpl has built a reputation around using recycled materials and creating durable outdoor products designed for long-term use rather than disposable gear culture.

The Final Word

Overall, I’ve genuinely enjoyed testing the Rumpl Camp Pillow. It’s comfortable, well-made, and feels much more like a real pillow than most camp-specific options. While I probably wouldn’t bring it on backpacking missions, it has become one of my favorite comfort items for car camping, ski trips, and travel days. As I write this review I am actually laying in my tent on my friends ranch with this exact pillow behind my head. If your priority is maximizing comfort while still keeping things relatively packable, this pillow is definitely worth considering!
