As an outdoor recreation consultant, history nut, and passionate trail lover based in Boulder, I’m accustomed to the varied terrain and unpredictable weather of the Rockies. My recent adventure, however, took me to the Hudson Valley, where I explored sections and offshoots of the Appalachian Trail, with a much more lush ecosystem than the semi-arid Rockies.

I went for runs and wandered trails that played a role during the American Revolution, with the area witnessing significant military engagements due to its strategic location on the Hudson River. The British considered control of the Hudson River crucial for dominating the American territories, leading to several battles in the area that would later become Bear Mountain State Park.

The first two days greeted me with violent afternoon thunderstorms, turning trails into muddy slogs, while the following days offered sunlit paths and somewhat drier conditions. This mix provided an ideal testing ground for the Techyak’s capabilities while I pondered the region’s historical significance.

Fit/Comfort

The Techyak boasts a Biodynamic Shape, offering a wider toe box that allows natural toe splay—a feature I appreciated during long hikes and short runs. The zero-drop, Level Footbed promotes a natural stance, enhancing balance and reducing fatigue. While the fit was snug around the midfoot and heel, I found it true to size, comfortably accommodating my C-width feet.

Look/Style

With earthy tones like Fern Green and Sierra Taupe, the Techyak blends functionality with understated style. Its design is versatile enough for long light and fast trail adventures and it fits right in for casual coffee or brewery stops along the way.

Features

Turbo Ventilation: The clever Reverse Mullet Mesh design promotes excellent airflow and water drainage, helping your shoes dry quickly—perfect for crossings or rain-filled adventures. Rechargeable Drop-In Midsoles: These 7mm midsoles add a comfy cushion and are easily replaceable, so your shoes stay fresh and ready to go for longer.
Trail Grip 2 Outsole with G.15 Rubber: Provides superb traction on both wet and dry surfaces, giving you extra confidence when navigating slippery rocks or muddy trails.
DirectConnect Construction: Boosts durability by bonding the outsole directly to the upper, minimizing the chances of separation.

Weight/Packability

Weighing about 9.8 oz (278g) per shoe, the Techyak is wonderfully lightweight and simple to pack. It’s perfect for adventure trips, multi-day hikes, trail running, or even slipping into your drybag or luggage as a handy backup pair.

Function/Performance

The Techyak performed really well even in damp conditions along the Appalachian Trail, thanks to its quick-drying mesh and excellent grip. On dry trails, its zero-drop design and flexible sole offered a natural, comfortable feel, making it easier to stay connected to the ground. However, when navigating the very rocky terrains in Colorado, the minimal cushioning meant you should pay extra attention to where you place your feet for safety.

Durability/Construction

After four days of testing under different conditions, the Techyak held up really well. The reinforced toe and heel kept out abrasions, and the mesh stayed in great shape despite encountering mud and water.

Friendliness to the Earth

Astral demonstrates a commitment to sustainability with the Techyak. The shoe features a 70% recycled (rPET) upper and laces, and its vegan construction avoids animal by-products. These eco-friendly choices align with the company’s efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Astral walks the talk, with its beginnings on a biodynamic farm and a mission to elevate experience in nature and protect the maximum amount of soil and water. hikes. They’re comfortable and stylish and I look forward to using them on the river!

The Final Word

For trail runners, hikers (and history buffs) who like a minimalist feel, natural foot movement, and adaptability across terrains, the Astral Techyak is a worthy contender. It’s a legit and light adventure shoe that I found great for traveling and exploring new places and geographies.
