ProView – RaidLight Hyperlight Windproof Jacket

Training for the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run 55k this summer has taken my trail running to new heights (literally) and given me ample opportunity to test the RaidLight Hyperlight Windproof Jacket. Training at higher altitudes brings a new set of challenges than my typical desert landscape including cold temperature starts, exposed ridgelines with high-speed winds, and variable weather throughout a run. These were the perfect conditions for this jacket to shine.

Overall
4.4

Pros

  • Extremely Light
  • Packable
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • No pockets
  • Version with hood adds extra weight
  • Shorter cut (though great for climbing)

Features/Performance

The jacket weighs an astonishingly light 50 grams. For comparison, this means it weighs less than a tennis ball. The jacket also has a small pocket that it stuffs into which compresses down to fit in the palm of your hand. There is even a small loop in the stuff pocket, which could be used to attach the jacket externally to my trail running vest for easy access. These features made it easy to justify carrying the extra layer since it easily packs down to fit in my running vest without adding much weight.

My favorite feature is obviously how lightweight this jacket is while maintaining its functionality. The first thing I noticed when putting on the jacket was how warm it was. The mesh in the armpits allows for ventilation, while the elastic sleeve and waist cuffs keep strong winds out.  These features made for a great balance of staying warm while not overheating.  Another feature of the jacket is its water resistance, which I got to test out in some light showers. The water repelled off the jacket during a light sprinkle, which made me feel confident in its ability to step up to the plate when a storm hits.

Fit/Function

Since I enjoy multiple outdoor activities, I decided to test the jacket while climbing to see if it could be used in other settings. The length was perfect to wear climbing without getting in the way of my harness or gear. This would be the perfect companion for multi-pitch climbing adventures, being super lightweight and having a gear loop to attach to your harness. I also wore this jacket kayaking at Lake Tahoe since it is windproof and water-resistant. The breeze on the lake was no match for this jacket.

As for the areas for improvement, my biggest request would be to add a pocket to easily stash items like an energy gel or car key. This was probably left out to save on weight, which is part of the compromise for such a lightweight jacket. Overall the jacket fit great, but I generally prefer longer tops. I would also prefer a few inches added to the length for additional protection while running, however, this feature made the jacket more versatile for other uses such as climbing with a harness. There is an upgraded version that offers a hood, but it also doubles the weight. When it is windy or storming outside, this would be a great feature to have, but each individual should consider whether the added weight and cost is worth the additional feature. However, as a jacket to take everywhere, the lightweight and compact size are higher on my priority list.
