ProView – Astral Pisgah 1.5 Review
I’ll be honest, when I first laced up the Astral Pisgah 1.5 in Mocha Brown, I was expecting them to become my everyday shoes. Earlier this spring, I fell in love with Astral’s TR 1 Mesh 2.0 and have rarely chosen a different shoe. Here I am, almost two months after first trying the Pisgah, and these waterproof, breathable, lightweight boots have earned the top spot in my footwear rotation. They’ve been with me from early morning yoga at my local gym to Wilderness First Responder training in Big Sur’s demanding terrain, and I’m absolutely in love with them.

Summary
True to size with a wider toe box that allows natural toe splay. These rPET waterproof boots became my most-worn shoes for everything from day-to-day wear to Wilderness First Responder training, logging lots of miles and different terrains in a week.
Overall
5Pros
- Genuinely waterproof and breathable
- Remarkably lightweight for a boot
- Versatile enough for town and trail
- Completely recycled upper (rPET) and entirely vegan shoe
Cons
- Can slip on wet, mossy rocks (though this is pretty specific terrain)
For the last two months, the Pisgah 1.5 has become my go-to for basically everything: loose-laced slip-ons for early morning yoga, errands, dressed-up looks around Sonoma County, and hiking miles through diverse terrain. The real test came during my WFR training in Big Sur, where I logged ~7 miles daily on intense inclines, creek crossings, and rocky scrambles.

As a yoga practitioner, California Naturalist, Educator and Trail Guide who spends significant time outdoors, I need footwear that handles the demands of both teaching and adventuring. Granted, I don’t teach yoga in hiking boots, but the proprioceptors (nerves in my feet) need to FEEL and not be stifled by a shoe. The Pisgah wide toe box allows me to keep the sensation in my feet alive, which helps with overall balance, coordination and movement awareness!
Fit & Comfort, Look & Style
The Pisgah 1.5 fits true to size with Astral’s signature Original Shape design, which includes a secure midfoot and heel combined with a wider toe box that lets your toes splay naturally. It took about a week to break them in, though truthfully, I think it was more about adjusting to the high-top pressure around my ankles than actual stiffness.
Right out of the box, the comfort was incredible. I’m so jazzed about the out-of-box comfort Astals offer that I got my friend to try on my boots, and then she bought them too. Style, comfort, and versatility? Chef’s kiss. Wearing a wide toe box boot was new to me, so it also took some getting used to the look and feel of having a wide toe box.

The zero-drop, Level Footbed from heel to ball and medium arch support works well for my feet, and I never experienced fatigue even during those challenging Big Sur days. I’ll admit, the climbs we did during training were challenging for me. There were moments when I was dog tired, and I would take a rest and happily wiggle my toes in the boots, knowing my feet felt great. The construction respects your foot’s natural position while providing stability on uneven terrain. At just 398 grams per boot (14 oz, men’s size 9), you barely feel them on your feet- remarkable for waterproof construction.
The Mocha Brown colorway is sophisticated and earthy. The dark brown upper with black rubber scuff cap pairs well with brown, black, and neutral looks- transitioning seamlessly from trail to town. I’ve styled them with everything from hiking gear to vintage jackets for a night out. I’ve received countless compliments over the last couple of months because of the clean lines, classic silhouette, and versatile aesthetic.

Features & Performance
The waterproof membrane genuinely works. During my Big Sur training, I waded in creeks and streams examining rocks, and my feet stayed dry. At one point, I stepped into a stream deeper than the boot’s height, fully submerging my foot. The boot dried remarkably quickly, and I continued hiking comfortably within an hour. That’s impressive.

The 100% recycled polyester (rPET) canvas upper has a soft, natural feel without the crinkly sound of some synthetic waterproofs. The boots are also breathable. My feet never felt clammy, even during strenuous uphill climbs.
The Trail Grip outsole with G.15 Rubber provided exceptional traction on steep climbs with scrambling. I never slipped on rocks or muddy trails during Big Sur. Full transparency: during one early rainy hike in Sonoma County, I did slip on wet rocks, but they were quite mossy. I don’t consider that a performance issue.
Durability & Construction
After two months of daily wear across varied conditions, these boots show minimal wear. The outsole has no visible degradation but does have some wrinkling, which is to be expected. The canvas upper remains intact despite contact with rocks and vegetation, and the waterproof membrane continues performing perfectly. The stitching looks solid throughout with no loose threads or separation.

Who Is This Product For?
The Pisgah 1.5 is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who value versatility and sustainability and refuse to compromise on performance or style. Ideal for those living in wet climates, folks transitioning to natural foot-shaped, zero-drop footwear, and those who want to lighten their load- wearing the same shoe from work to the trail. Zero drop footwear can help to strengthen feet and ankles, getting the intrinsic muscles and ligaments in the feet and ankles to work harder and get stronger. I’d recommend this boot for anyone who wants to strengthen and support their feet on technical terrain.

Friendliness to the Earth
Astral demonstrates genuine environmental consideration—the Pisgah uppers are 100% post-consumer recycled polyester (rPET) canvas, and the entire boot is vegan. Their Protect Soil + Water initiative emphasizes designs that minimize contamination of essential resources using recycled materials. The durable construction means these should last many seasons, reducing replacement frequency.
I’d love to see more transparency about manufacturing standards and potential involvement in programs like WRAP or FLA. While Astral states they carefully select suppliers aligning with their values, third-party verification would strengthen their sustainability story.

The Final Word
The Astral Pisgah 1.5 proves that waterproof boots don’t have to be heavy or clunky. They’ve become my favorite shoes for everyday use.
