ProView – GOREWEAR Women’s Running Kit Review

I was excited to take GOREWEAR’s Concurve Tights, Everyday Long Sleeve and Concurve GTX Jacket out for a tour of some of San Francisco’s urban hotspots for the daily runner, including the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and Twin Peaks (wouldn’t be SF without the hills!). While I wasn’t able to test the jacket in rainy weather, I did take it out on a windy day and do a “spray test” to see how the material held up in water. The jacket performed excellently as a windproof layer and any water beaded and rolled off the material seamlessly. Overall, while there are some features of the clothing items that could benefit from improvements, they offer a flattering streamlined profile, with true-to-size fit and second-skin feel.

Summary

GOREWEAR’s clothing items are flattering and functional, perfect for working out and looking good while doing it. While I tested these clothes in a city environment, they would perform well for any athlete in most environments. They are exceptionally comfortable, ergonomically designed, moisture-wicking, durable and environmentally conscious. Made with recycled content and non PFC’s in the waterproof layer, GOREWEAR has taken significant steps to reduce their environmental impact. However, there are some features of the clothing items that could use some additional updates.

Fit/Comfort

All of GOREWEAR’s clothing items are comfortable and movement-friendly, as well as true to size. The leggings feel like a second-skin (almost like a thin wetsuit layer) and stay in place when running and working out.

The long sleeve is breathable and wicks away sweat quickly; it is also broad enough in the shoulders so that it doesn’t restrict movement for women with an athletic build. However, I would suggest lengthening the sleeves to fit more body types and allow runners to choose the amount of coverage they prefer. The sleeves were a bit too short for me.

The jacket fit perfectly and was big enough to zip over a base layer, yet still offered a streamlined fit. The sleeves are plenty long enough to provide full coverage over the wrists and hands in inclement conditions. The jacket wasn’t “loud” like some waterproof materials, and made for a comfortable quiet run.

Look/Style

I love the look of GOREWEAR’s Concurve Tights and Concurve GTX Jacket. Both are flattering and functional at the same time. However, having more color options could be a fun addition to both items. When the hood is pulled up on the jacket, it gave my head a slightly odd cone shape unless I pulled the cinch tight.

The Everyday Long-Sleeve could use a few additional features (discussed below) to give it that extra “wow” factor. It reminded me of a more lightweight version of Patagonia’s Capilene midweight long sleeve, which I have in the same purple color.

Features

Concurve Tights

These tights are flattering runner’s leggings: lightweight, breathable, stretchy and moisture wicking. Not to mention they also include a generous waist pocket and an additional side pocket, along with reflective details. While the waist pocket was roomy, it was a bit of a hassle to get items in and out (like my car key) due to the flap of fabric that folds over the pocket. Most leggings don’t use that additional material and the inconvenience outweighs the extra protection it might offer. Lastly, while I loved the inclusion of a side pocket, my small Apple SE phone barely fit (stretching the material). Most phones are larger so a more generously sized and reinforced side pocket would be appreciated.

Further, I did not find the drawstrings necessary in these tights to keep them in place. Even without needing to tighten the drawstrings and tie them off, I still noticed additional bulk in the waistline, especially when I opted to wear them with just a sports bra.

Everyday Long Sleeve

GOREWEAR has created an effective lightweight, moisture-wicking, quick-drying and breathable layer for runners. The shirt does what it says it will do, while also keeping odors at bay.

However, there are some additional features that would make this shirt stand out more. The sleeves only come down to my wrists and feel a bit short. Creating longer sleeves or sleeves with thumbholes would likely appeal to more runners, for those who get cold fingers or who appreciate the extra sun protection over their hands. I would also love to see more fabrics utilizing UV-rated fabrics, especially lightweight running shirts.

Concurve GTX Jacket

This is an amazing jacket, not just for cities, but also for epic mountain scrambles and adventures where packable weather-protection is necessary. This is a lightweight and effective layer with GOREWEAR’s “dry guarantee.” With a streamlined, flattering and movement-friendly fit, hand pockets, reflective details, and an adjustable hood, it is a complete package. I loved the magnet that attaches the hood to the back of the jacket to keep in place when not in use. The jacket is also free of PFC’s, which is an environmental toxin found in many waterproof clothing items.

Function/Performance

All three items proved to be breathable, moisture-wicking, movement-friendly, and durable. They fit in seamlessly in the San Francisco environment, yet would also perform excellently on more wild pursuits.

The long sleeve is a great material for running and high impact sports due to its ability to minimize wet-cling, preventing your sweaty shirt from sticking to your body. I found it dried out extremely fast and did not absorb body odor like some materials – leaving me not as smelly as I could be.

The leggings were the perfect lightweight layer for high impact exercise. Due to their stretch and comfort, they would also make for excellent hiking, yoga, and everyday tights to add to your wardrobe. While they would be too lightweight for snow or cold winter temperatures, they are perfect for warmer weather and transition seasons such as spring and fall.

I have full faith in staying dry in the GORE-TEX jacket; it sheds water easily and quickly, as well as blocks wind. It works great in cooler, wetter weather on casual short workouts. While I tested it in city conditions, I believe this jacket would be perfect for mountain adventures due to its packability, light weight and ability to withstand inclement weather.

Durability and Construction

Concurve Tights

These tights are made using GOREWEAR’s Kinetic Garment Design to create an ergonomic movement-friendly fabric. The dope-dyed material additionally increases durability, weather resistance and breathability for high performance. Ultimately, GOREWEAR is committed to producing high quality items that will last a long time to reduce environmental impact. To further support sustainability, they use recycled polyester in their Concurve Tights and test all materials for harmful toxins before using them in any of their clothing lines.

Everyday Long Sleeve

This long sleeve also contains recycled polyester and showcases a 3D mini waffle structure to enhance moisture wicking properties. The seams are placed strategically to avoid discomfort and irritation during high impact activities.

Concurve GTX Jacket

This jacket is 100% recycled nylon and utilizes durable and reliable GORE-TEX material to keep you dry while still remaining breathable enough so that sweat can vaporize. It also uses GOREWEAR’s Kinetic Garment Design to create freedom of motion using PFC-free material. PFC’s are common toxins in rain gear that pollute the environment and can cause health concerns over time. GOREWEAR has instead opted to use non-fluorinated materials to further reduce their environmental footprint.

The Final Word

I am excited to continue using GOREWEAR’s clothing for my daily runs and workouts! While the pockets and drawstrings of the Concurve Leggings could be improved, I found the fit of the tights to be flattering and comfortable. The Everyday Long Sleeve performed excellently at wicking away sweat, though longer sleeves, thumb holes and UV rated fabric would add additional appealing features for the daily runner. Lastly, the Concurve GTX Jacket proved to be an excellent shell layer that I am excited to continue using in winter’s stormy conditions and the inclement weather of the mountains.
