ProView – Superfeet Sport Ultralight Review

As a skier, runner, and hiker, my feet usually feel pretty beat up. Whether I’m on snow or dirt, I’m used to losing toenails or dealing with aching arches at the end of a long day. While I finally feel like I have my ski boot comfort dialed in, Spring brought a new challenge: hiking in trail shoes to reach the backcountry with boots and skis on my back. My feet were hurting. So, you can imagine how stoked I was to swap my stock liners for the Superfeet Sport Ultralight insoles!

Fit/Comfort 

The Superfeet Sport Ultralight insoles are trim-to-fit, so you can size them exactly to your shoe using your stock insole as a guide (don’t be too quick to throw those out!). Once trimmed, they disappeared seamlessly into my shoes. However, because you customize them to a specific insole shape, I found it difficult to switch them between my road and trail runners, as the shoe shapes are quite different.

Look/Style

There isn’t much to report on aesthetics; it’s an insole, after all, but the construction looks clean and purposeful. The thin SuperRev foam and carbon fiber arch support maintain a low profile that doesn’t add any visual bulk once inside the shoe.

Features/Weight

I really felt the combination of the SuperRev foam and EVOLyte carbon fiber arch support. When I first put on my road running shoes with the insoles, I could feel the support and lightness without any added bulk inside my shoe. The foam felt nice underfoot and my heel was locked in. The heel piece also makes it easy to remove the insoles to air out; though I found that even on a sweating day, crossing streams, they dried quickly inside my shoes.

Function/Performance

I first tested the Sport Ultralights in my road runners during my regular morning loops around my neighborhood and the Boulder foothills. These runs have admittedly been more of a jog with the recent heat and wildfire smoke. Despite running at a slower pace, the first thing I noticed was how springy I felt; the insoles were almost making my steps feel like they were rebounding back the energy I put into them. My high arches felt supported without the insole feeling like it was fighting my foot or crowding the shoe. I felt just the right amount of cushion and support on pavement, gravel, and dirt. And my arches have felt significantly less strained over the past few weeks. The heel cup helps prevent my heels from wiggling and my toes from jamming, which means fewer worries about losing toenails!

A few weeks later, I tested the Sport Ultralights in my trail runners on a seven-mile hike to an alpine lake with 1,800 feet of gain. The low-volume shoe setup was the exact scenario these were built for. They felt amazing on the smoother, flatter stretches, absorbing and rebounding impact from hard surfaces such as rocks and roots. However, once the trail turned steep with large steps, I couldn’t feel a huge difference from my stock insoles. This isn’t a flaw, and maybe I was just tired, but rather a reminder that these insoles are designed for speed and agility, not for technical, slow-paced hiking over rugged terrain. On the descent, my arches felt well-supported, and the cushioning for the ball of my foot was far superior to any stock insole.

Superfeet’s sustainability efforts impressed me when I looked into them – renewable-powered HQ, major cuts to plastic packaging, and recycled content showing up across their line. 

The Final Word 

After putting the Sport Ultralights through many different conditions, I realized these insoles perform their best when on hard surfaces; they are made of foam and carbon fiber which are targeted at creating a soft, responsive impact cushioning and energy rebound for your steps. I noticed that “bounce-back feel” mostly on pavement, making my road runs feel much more forgiving. I usually seek out the patches of dirt or grass on a road run, but with these insoles I was drawn to the feel of the pavement. I decided to play some tennis with these insoles too and wow, this is where the Sport Ultralights shined; I felt agile, quick on my feet running to the ball, and stability and support when I came to quick stops and swung without movement within my shoe. My feet are much less achy after runs, thanks to the targeted support for my high arches, and the secure heel lock is a lifesaver for my toenails. While they are fantastic for a lightweight running and athletic sport feel, I wouldn’t recommend these as a versatile, rock-eating, ascent footbed. My final word is the Sport Ultralights are thoughtfully designed for a fast, lightweight, and “sporty” feel!
