ProView – GRAYL UltraPress Water Filter & Purifier Bottle

Grayl makes a huge line of different products, but in my opinion, the most bang for you buck is a water bottle that filters water as you go. Why waste space for a separate filter when you can use a bottle that also filters water?

Summary

A little heavy but worth the weight. You can eliminate an entire water bottle that you bring with you and a separate filtering system. It has a nice carrying handle too!

Overall
4.4

Pros

  • Fits in a cup holder
  • Filters quickly
  • Can replace the filter for cheaper than other brands
  • Carry handle

Cons

  • Limited amount of water storage
  • The cap has no tether to the top, like Nalgene bottles do.

Things have been hectic for me lately. Being able to get outside is a wonderful thing to counteract that my heavy work schedule and life in general. I got out to a local park with the dogs and put a few miles under out feet/paws. I’ve used other brands of water filters on weeklong hunting trips into the Sawtooth mountains and the Frank Church wilderness. Let alone the countless backpacking trips.

My wife and I took the GRAYL bottles with us on a short hike. We knew there was a stream at the bottom of the park that we take the dogs to. They like to walk in the water and drink from the stream, it’s a beautiful place to decompress. We sat down there for a while and gave the GRAYL UltraPress a go. It is very simple to use and had clean, great tasting water by the time the easy process was done. I could see having a couple of normal water bottles on hand for a routine trip. You can filter the water and pour it into a separate bottle. The amount of water is just right for making coffee or cooking normal meals in the back country, and you can always filter more. The GRAYL Ultrapress is something to keep in the vehicle for emergency use as well. It’s just a good all-around bottle to have on hand. The design is genius.

Fit/Comfort

The GRAYL Ultrapress fits into side pockets of bags. It’s easy to carry and fits into a cup holder.

Look/Style

The GRAYL has a simple design that comes in many colors. The tactical colors work just the same as the pretty colors.

Features

The GRAYL has a carry handle, a changeable filter, a screw top drinking port, and a non-slip base for pressing on slippery rocks.

Weight/Packability

The Ultrapress is the size of a normal bottle, though the filter adds more weight. The whole bottle weighs 12.5 oz.

Function/Performance

The GRAYL Ultrapress removes a lot of different objects from the water such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa, particulates, chemicals, and heavy metals. Each filter will do 300 presses or 40 gallons. A few filters cost a little over $25 so it’s easier to stomach that a new filter replace of almost $50 for competitors.

Durability/Construction

The bottle is made from BPA free, food grade plastics, and grippy rubber for easy handling.

A few other considerations:

  • The bottle can handle a 6-foot drop while full of water while my other filters I treat as if they are made of glass.
  • It was very easy to use and convenient to have.
  • I was beyond impressed with this product
  • If you are cooking or making coffee, the AeroPress is a lightweight coffee making system that we use, and the Ultrapress filters the right amount for making coffee.
  • I know I’ll be buying some of these as Christmas gifts to pass around to some of my hunting buddies to carry around with them.

What sets the product apart?

Most water purifying systems don’t have a water holding system. You must pump into a separate container that weighs just as much, if not more. This is a compact and easy to use system.

Who is the product for?

The Grayl water purifying systems are meant for anybody outside. It’s a wonderful system that even if you run out of water, you can simply have clean water with you — filter and bottle all in one.

Friendliness to the Earth

Grayl donates at least 1% into groups for public land, clean water around the world, programs to help build better outdoor facilities for all to use. They donate to help with rebuilding in natural disaster areas and preserving natural areas outside of the U.S. as well as within. Even the filter cartridges can be mailed back into them and recycled to keep products out of the landfills.

The Final Word

This is a wonderful product. The company has a solid foundation for conservation and creates a quality product. It’s the easiest and quickest filter I’ve ever used. I enjoy how simple it is to filter water and release the need to carry excessive products around with me.
