ProView – Thule OutPace Review

I recently took the Thule OutPace to Moab on a work trip, and it ended up being the perfect testing ground. The drive there alone gave it plenty of chances to prove itself. We went from smooth highways to the kind of bumpy back roads that shake every loose thing in your car, and then onto rocky approaches out to the campsite and the trails. Through all of it, the OutPace stayed super steady. I kept waiting for that familiar wobble I’m used to with my old rack, but it honestly never came. The whole setup felt locked in, which gave me a lot of confidence hauling my bike over miles of rough terrain.

Ease of Use/Setup

The setup process was simple, which I always appreciate. The instructions are easy to follow, the hardware makes sense, and the whole thing feels like it was designed by someone who actually uses bike racks in the real world. Once it’s mounted, it locks in with zero movement, and loading up bikes is just as easy. Everything lines up naturally, and you don’t have to wrestle with straps or fight with awkward angles just to secure things. Day-to-day, it’s one of those products that works exactly the way you hope it will. I also like that it folds up cleanly when you’re not using it. It saves space, looks tidy, and just makes life easier.

Quality 

The build quality is exactly what I expect from Thule – strong, durable, and clearly made from high-quality materials. The finish still looks new after multiple trips, and it hasn’t shown any signs of rust or wear. Even the smaller components, like the joints, feel solid and well-designed. I’ve driven with it in all kinds of weather, and it hasn’t loosened up or started to rattle even a bit. Everything feels high quality in a practical way, which makes me think it’s going to last a long time before anything needs replacing.

Pros

For pros, the biggest one for me is stability. There’s very little wobble, which makes the whole setup feel safer and more reliable. It’s also very easy to load and unload. There’s no fuss, no wasted time, and you don’t have to figure out the rack every time you use it. The overall build feels tough, and the folding feature makes it super convenient to keep on the car without it sticking out or taking up space when you’re not riding.

Cons

There are a couple of downsides worth mentioning. The weight is the main one — it’s definitely heavier than I expected. It’s fine once it’s mounted, but lifting it on and off can take some effort. If you move racks between vehicles often, you’ll definitely feel it. The other con is the price. It’s on the higher end for racks in this category. I think the quality justifies it, but if someone is trying to keep costs down, this one might feel a little pricey.

Durability

In terms of durability, I’d rate it really high. Nothing has loosened, nothing rattles, and the whole structure still feels solid. I haven’t seen any signs of wear, and all the mechanisms still function like new. It seems built for the long haul, even with frequent use.

Final Thoughts 

Overall though, the Thule OutPace performs really well. It’s easy to use, feels super secure, and has the durability you want in something you’ll rely on all season. What I like most is that it doesn’t require a lot of thought. Once it’s set up, it just works. The design feels like it came from actual rider feedback instead of just focusing on flashy features that don’t matter. Even small things like the way the handles and latches are positioned make it nicer to use day after day.

In past jobs I’ve used tons of different bike racks when taking kids up to the mountains for biking lessons and the OutPace is one of the most dependable and user-friendly racks I’ve used. The weight and price keep it from being a perfect rating, but it’s easily one of the best options out there if you care about stability, ease of use, and long-term reliability.
