Overall
4.2Pros
- Warm
- Durable and easy to clean
- Intuitive features such as the corner zippered stash pocket and water resistant fabric
- Stylish designs/colors
Cons
- Slightly bulky compared to other options
- On the pricier side
I’ve been living and recreating in Salt Lake City for the past 6 years, and spend most of my time snowboarding, splitboarding, hiking, backpacking, camping, trail running, mountain biking- pretty much anything outside. One thing I’ve learned is that the weather can flip fast, so having warm layers on hand is a must.

I’ve mainly used the Rumpl Backcountry Puffy for snowy ski tailgates, hammocking, picnics, and even brought it on a desert backpacking trip in southern Utah. I was very glad I kept it in my car when sunny tailgates turned cold, windy, and wet. Being able to wrap up between runs made a huge difference. It’s also perfect for throwing in a hammock or using as a picnic blanket.
I didn’t think I’d need it as much in the desert, but temps dropped a lot at night and it kept me super warm. At this point, it’s one of those things I grab without thinking and just keep in my car because I know it’ll come in handy. I can definitely see myself bringing it on future backpacking trips, ski yurt trips, and car camping adventures too.

Packability
While the website states this blanket is 25% more packable than the original Rumpl blanket, I still feel like it’s bulkier than other ultralight options. This is not an issue for car camping, tailgates, hammocking, etc, but it did take up a bit of space in my pack when backpacking.

Weight
The weight is very reasonable for the size and while it feels a little bulky when packed, it does not feel heavy.
Size
The size is perfect to wrap around one person or to use as a leg blanket for two people. There is an option to purchase a bigger two person blanket on the website and the ability to link multiple blankets together with the built in clips.

Style
I’ve always loved Rumpl’s bright, nature-inspired colors and designs. I have the Moraine Mist colorway with topo lines, which blends lighter and darker blues on one side with a simple dark blue on the other. It looks good without being overly flashy and fits the outdoor vibe perfectly.
I love the addition of the corner zipper stash pouch that is perfect for storing keys, chapstick, wallet or any other important small items. I also noticed there are loops on the corners that can be used for staking the blanket down, which adds to the intuitive design.

Warmth
The Rumpl Backcountry Puffy blanket is very warm! It kept me toasty during chilly ski tailgates and cold desert nights while backpacking. I love the clips that allow the blanket to be worn as a cape too!
What Sets It Apart
What sets this blanket apart is the combination of warmth, durability, and versatility. It’s not just for one activity- you can use it pretty much anywhere, which makes it worth having on hand all the time. The durable, water-resistant fabric makes precipitation, spills, and dirt easy to deal with. After a long backpacking weekend (or if your pet’s muddy paws somehow end up all over it) you can just throw it in the washing machine and it’s ready for the next adventure. The corner zippered pocket and cape clips make the Rumpl Backcountry Puffy blanket unique and ready for all your adventures and everyday hangs.

Who It’s For
The Rumpl Backcountry Puffy blanket is perfect for anyone who spends time outside in colder conditions but doesn’t want to overcomplicate their gear. It’s great for skiers, campers, or just people who like being outside and want something reliable, durable, and easy.
Final Word
While this blanket is not the lightest or cheapest option, it’s super functional and something I reach for all the time. The Rumpl Backcountry Puffy blanket is worth it if you want a versatile, durable, go-anywhere blanket. Throw it in your backpack or car to be prepared for any adventure or weather that lies ahead.
