ProView – Exped Comfort -10

When looking for a cold-weather sleeping bag, I always felt that I was settling for something that didn’t quite fit the bill. Then I was introduced to the Men’s EXPED Comfort -10 bag, and I realized that there is a sleeping bag for me. I’m the type of sleeper who moves quite a bit through the night. In other sleeping bags, I would wake up with the bag twisted around me unsure of where the zipper was. In the Comfort -10, I had enough room to roll around all night without waking up to the dread of figuring out how to extricate myself from the bag. To top it off, the bag is warm, comfy, and loaded with features that make it a top-notch sleeping bag.

Features

My first experience with the bag was on one of the first cold nights of the season. I was working in Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina, and I decided I would do the three-hour drive the night before, so I wouldn’t have to wake up at 4:00 am. I pulled into the campsite at around 8:00 pm, just before they closed the gate. That night the temps dipped into the upper 20’s, but I managed to stay cozy all night. In fact, I got a bit too warm and had to unzip to cool off halfway through the night. This leads me to the first feature of the sleeping bag that piqued my interest, the zippered foot box. 

Most sleeping bags have a full zip either ending before the footbox or unzipping past the footbox to convert into a blanket. The Comfort -10 has a combo, giving you the option to either unzip just the footbox or unzip the entire bag into a blanket. This feature alone sold me on the sleeping bag. I’m the type of person that often likes to let my feet breath at night and having the ability to unzip just the footbox of the sleeping bag is a big deal for me. Though this is my favorite feature, the list of features doesn’t stop there. In fact, this bag has just about everything you would want out of a sleeping bag, excluding weight and packability (which I will discuss later).

Size

The EXPED Men’s Comfort is named so due to the amount of volume in the bag. The bag is extra wide from the shoulders all the way down to the feet, which allows for a comfortable night’s sleep. The extra volume allows for more movement inside the bag without the bag getting twisted around the body. I tend to roll around a lot in my sleep, and after multiple nights in the bag I never woke up twisted up in the bag. Additionally, the sleeping bag has more volume vertically at the feet to minimize compression of the insulation and keeping your feet nice and toasty. 

Warmth

One might think that with the extra volume of the bag you would create the potential for heat loss. This bag proves the contrary. The Comfort -10 has a plush neck tube that cinches down comfortably to trap heat. The hood of the bag also cinches down tight around the face adding another layer to help retain heat. The pull tabs for the hood adjustment are shaped and sized differently, with the chin area having a larger cylindrical pull and the upper hood a smaller flat pull. To round out the heat retention features of the Comfort -10, the side zipper is located closer to the ground and has a plush tube extending the length of the zipper with a button snap at the top. With the zipper positioned close to the ground combined with the baffle tube, I never felt cold air infiltrating the zipper, which can be a problem with other sleeping bags.

The final feature of the bag that I really liked was the small zippered opening on the left side of the bag. This allows you to stay inside the sleeping bag while being able to use both hands, which is nice when you’re cooking inside your vestibule or reading a book. With the foot box unzipped and your arms free to move, you can essentially “wear” the sleeping bag around. This isn’t something I do often, but it does come in handy from time to time. Converting the bag to a quilt was the feature I found myself using a lot and my wife loved, whether we were sitting bundled up by the campfire or sleeping in the back of my truck.

Room for Improvement

The EXPED Men’s Comfort -10 is designed for comfort first which brings me to the downsides of the bag. The sleeping bag is roomy and well-insulated which also makes it bulkier and heavier than some sleeping bags. Due to the bulk and weight, I wouldn’t recommend this bag for much more than winter car camping, a weekend backpacking trip, or when weight doesn’t matter. As a blanket, the bag can sleep two people, so it is handy for summer alpine climbing or backpacking. The bulk of the bag means it takes up a lot of room in the backpack. However, I did try stuffing it into another brand’s compression bag and was able to get it down to a smaller profile.

The Final Word

Overall, I found the EXPED Men’s Comfort -10 to be a great sleeping bag with extensive features to allow the bag to function well in the winter as well as the shoulder seasons. With smart, thought-out features, such as the adjustments around the hood and durable, high-quality materials, the Comfort -10 stands out from other sleeping bags. The EXPED Men’s Comfort -10 is a great bag for someone like me who spends more nights car camping over backcountry camping. For the backcountry, I am willing to sacrifice comfort for the ability to travel further, faster, but if I’m sleeping in the back of my truck or a short walk from it, the Comfort -10 is my go-to winter bag.
