ProView – Klymit Static V Luxe SL Sleeping Pad

Before this pad, most of my experience sleeping in a tent has been on a much thinner back-packing style mat. The Static V Luxe SL pad really changed my mind about what type of comfort is available while camping. It stood up to the test on a handful of camping trips in the Rocky Mountains over the past couple of months and I’m pleasantly surprised with the luxury it provides me while sleeping in the great outdoors.

Klymit Static V Luxe SL Sleeping Pad

Product Description: The Static V Luxe SL is a lightweight, luxury sleeping pad. The sleeping pad is the thickest pad in the Static Series line at 3.5”. It’s the perfect balance of weight, width, and length in a luxury size. Slightly slimmer than the Static V Luxe, weight is trimmed by using a lightweight fabric and a slight taper at the bottom third of the pad. The exclusive V-chamber design conforms to the shape of your body while maintaining ample, lofted air pockets. The result: side, back, and stomach sleepers can all rest comfortably on a generous bed of air.

Summary

If you’re car camping, this pad is a must. When it comes to backpacking and being more conscious of your pack weight, this pad could be smaller and lighter. As a shorty, I personally don’t need so much length on my pad but I can definitely deal with the extra size and weight for the comfort I’m getting here. I don’t do a ton of cold weather camping so this version of the pad is great for me, but if you plan to do some colder trips, I might suggest the insulated version of the pad.

Overall
4.6

Pros

  • Extra thickness provides ultimate comfort
  • Simple and easy to use
  • Separate inflate/deflate valves

Cons

  • Not insulated, so be careful on cold nights!
  • Packed weight and size are on the larger side

I’ve always been an extremely deep sleeper, except when it comes to camping. I tend to sleep on my side and the thin pads I’ve used never supported me as much as I would’ve liked. Sleeping on the Static V Luxe SL exceeded my expectations. Over the past few trips, my boyfriend has even tried to switch pads with me as his pad is clearly inferior.

Most of the camping trips I took this pad on had relatively mild weather (low was in the mid to low 40s), but last weekend the weather at night dipped down into the low 30s. During the colder night, I definitely could’ve used the insulated version of this pad.

Fit / Comfort

This pad is luxurious in my opinion. It’s the thickest pad I’ve ever slept on in a tent and I’ve been loving it. It was super comfortable when laying on my side and I slept really well when using it. One thing that was different to me about this was the size. Coming in at 6’5” tall and 2’2” wide, it is noticeably bigger than any pad I’ve ever used. I’m 5’1”, so the height and width don’t really matter to me personally, but having the extra room was nice and I didn’t get anywhere close to slipping off the pad during the night. This seems like it’d be a great option for someone who is taller and looking for a great night of sleep.

Features

The inflation/deflations valves are great. There is a separate one for each function, which makes adding and removing air extremely easy. I’ve never seen valves like these before so I was a little confused at first…I thought it must be used with a pump of some kind, but to my surprise, you can just put your mouth around it and blow air into it to inflate. Since the valves are separate, inflating was a piece of cake. You can take a break without having to worry about losing air. It only took about 20 breaths to get it at full capacity too! Deflating was also straightforward and fitting it back into the bag after rolling it up was super easy.

Weight/Packability

The pad comes in at 20.8oz and 9in x7in when packed up. If you’re car camping, obviously the size doesn’t matter much so this is a great option. While this is a super comfortable pad, if you want to go super light on a backpacking trip, there are definitely lighter and smaller pads to choose from. Compared to my old backpacking pad, it’d add an additional 5oz and a few inches to the load. It just depends on how light you need your pack to be. I do wish it came in a smaller sizing option since I definitely don’t need over 6’ of length when sleeping. I’m definitely going to bring this pad backpacking with me though because I really like the pad. I’m willing to sacrifice some weight and space in my pack for a better night’s sleep.

Durability

So far, this mat has held up great. It comes with a patch kit just in case I need it too. The fabric is thick and the pad feels well-made. The air held inside the mat really well. Only on a three-night trip did I have to blow extra air into it before I went to bed. It did well on grass and dirt, while still providing great comfort. Just like every mat, it will be the test of time which will determine how durable this pad really is. So far, I’m really happy with it, so I’m hoping it continues to hold up like it is!

The Final Word

If you’re car camping, this pad is a must. When it comes to backpacking and being more conscious of your pack weight, this pad could be smaller and lighter. As a shorty, I personally don’t need so much length on my pad but I can definitely deal with the extra size and weight for the comfort I’m getting here. I don’t do a ton of cold weather camping so this version of the pad is great for me, but if you plan to do some colder trips, I might suggest the insulated version of the pad.

Overall, the Static V Luxe SL sleeping pad is super comfortable and easy to use. It’s a level of luxury I didn’t know I needed while camping. Even though I can’t give this the test of a tall person, I’m confident this would be a great option for someone who is 6’ or taller and doesn’t want their feet hanging off the end of their pad. I’m super happy with this pad and I can’t wait to continue taking it on all my adventures to come.

Even Franklin loved it!

Is this a noisy pad? Does it make crinkling sounds when you roll or move?

Thanks for your question, Faye! When the pad is blown up, it doesn’t make a crinkling noise 🙂

Would it fit inside a mummy bag for extra cold nights? Thanks.

Hey Nicole! I think it would depend on how large your sleeping bag is. This pad would not fit into my sleeping bag. I’d suggest comparing the dimensions of the pad (6’5” tall and 2’2” wide) to your bag to know for sure!
